Integral Group is working with the Saudi Arabian National Guard Health Affairs and King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University (KSAU) to assist in the planning and design of three completely new health sciences universities in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Al Ahsa in Saudi Arabia.

The University’s goal is to construct medical education facilities that will be rated among the world’s top five medical education universities. Combined, the academic and research buildings for the three campuses represent approximately 4 million square feet of built area.

In addition to the design efforts for the Jeddah campus, Integral Group also completed energy analysis comparisons for three of the Jeddah buildings: the research building (100,000 ft²), the deanship building (86,000 ft²), and the administration building (140,000 ft²). Each energy model for the three buildings compared the ASHRAE Standard 90.1 baseline against the proposed design for each building to establish its predicted annual energy performance. Energy models incorporated building envelope calculations, occupancy data and expected occupancy schedules, lighting, and receptacle power densities, operating schedules, exterior lighting, lighting controls, and information on all utility rates, including electricity, gas, water, and plant chilled water. A minimum performance of LEED Gold is targeted for each of the buildings.

Project Highlights

The mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design was required to meet the intense climatic conditions of the three sites and to be highly sustainable and flexible for future research and teaching program changes. Sustainable strategies for the building systems include:

  • Energy recovery and/or evaporative cooling to pretreat ventilation air

  • Displacement air systems for large tiered lecture halls

  • Daylighting analysis and controls

  • Grey water flushing system
