Linkedin wanted their new Sunnyvale office to be both beautiful and energy efficient.

They renovated an existing 1970s concrete building to reduce its carbon footprint significantly. The team installed a 245 kW photovoltaic (PV) array on the roof to offset the building’s energy needs. A large, vaulted atrium in the building’s center is filled with trees and plants, providing a biophilic space for casual meetings and shared meals.

Introba (formerly Integral Group) provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing concepts and complete design of the electrical systems. The building uses a variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system, which provides low-maintenance, all-electric heating and cooling. This design approach, accompanied by a dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS), separates the exhaust air exiting the building from the outside air used for ventilation; this prevents mixed or recirculated air.

The team also performed daylighting design and sustainability consulting services. The project achieved Net Zero Energy by Introba providing simulation and design criteria for active skylight systems in office spaces. Skylights automatically modulate throughout the day and year to deliver a diffuse, comfortable daylight environment, regardless of sky conditions. The daylighting and lighting team incorporated twenty skylights throughout the building, drastically reducing the building’s energy needs. An automatic controls system keeps down plug loads, and electrical outlets are color-coded to clarify which outlets will remain active overnight. An interactive energy dashboard in the lobby displays real-time energy use by the different systems in the building, broken down by the hour.

While illumination uniformity defines the workspaces’ daylit experience, the environment is balanced by a lively sun-filled central community space, where a generous clear glass skylight washes the dynamic space with abundant sunlight and mature trees.
