Ed Garrod chairs “Successful Energy Management Strategies” seminar at Ecobuild 2015

The Ecobuild Building Performance theatre was standing room only to watch Elementa Consulting Principal Ed Garrod present and chair a session on “Successful Energy Management Strategies”.
His presentation focused on ‘fine-tuning’ of building systems for both energy savings and occupant satisfaction. The disconnect between Clients and the teams who design, commission and maintain their buildings has a huge impact on energy performance, yet there is little in the way of regulation in the UK to bridge this gap. Against this backdrop Ed made the case for employing an independent commissioning authority – standard practice on all LEED® projects – as a prerequisite for high performance. Combining this approach with Soft Landings principles can unlock the energy savings that are missed in so many new buildings. It’s a challenge taken up every day by our Performance Engineering teams in the UK, USA and Canada.

Looking to the future Ed showcased transformative technologies that are enabling buildings to fine tune themselves in real time – and better connect occupants with the performance of their immediate environment. To succeed fine tuning has to be about listening to people as well as listening to performance data – simultaneously delivering the financial rewards of energy performance and employee health, productivity and engagement.

Ed was joined on stage by Marion Beaver – Energy Engagement Consultant at M Beaver Associates, Nina Reid – Director: Responsible Property Investment, M&G Real Estate, and Malcolm Hanna – Malcolm Hanna, Technical Director, National Energy Foundation.
