Neglected to Net Zero: Renewal of a Historic Building to a Sustainable Center for Environmental Education | 9:30am
Marilyn Specht, Associate – Sustainability
Nika Parsa, Associate Principal – Electrical
The Robert Redford Conservancy, once an abandoned historic building that had been damaged in a fire, was transformed into a zero net energy, LEED Platinum learning center which is educating the next generation of change-makers. This project is an important example of existing building reuse as it relates to embodied carbon and the opportunities to transform existing spaces into new purposes.
The project team worked together to implement smart, cost-effective, simple design decisions including passive design elements, reusing many of the buildings existing features, and on‐site PV. These strategies worked together to reduce the overall energy consumption of the building while serving as an educational opportunity for the students at the college.
