CANMET Materials Technology Laboratory Wins Top 10 at AIA-COTE

CANMET Materials Technology Laboratory (MTL) in Hamilton ON has been selected by American Institute of Architects as one of the 2015 COTE Top Ten Green Projects. Along with the nine other selected projects, CANMET will be honored at the AIA 2015 National Convention and Design Exposition in May in Atlanta.

AIA and its Committee on the Environment (COTE) select the top ten buildings based on their sustainable architecture and ecological design that protect and enhance the environment.

CANMET received LEED Platinum rating in 2013, making it the third research lab in Canada and the only one of its type to receive this rating. This 174,300 sq ft lab and support office space incorporates a complex industrial program of pilot scale casting, rolling, welding, corrosion, and mechanical testing alongside microstructure evaluations and radiation testing. With over 800 customized pieces of equipment in addition to generic lab equipment; CANMET is a complex and energy use intensive building. A building charter targeted significant energy use reduction to exceed the and achieve a 70% energy use reduction, a goal that is particularly challenging for an industrial lab building.

Designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects, Integral Group provided mechanical and electrical consulting services for this $69 million facility which was completed in 2011.
