Thoughtful Design for Research and Higher Education
Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM) was one of the winners of the 2014 AIA|DC Chapter Awards in the Research and Higher Education Category.
Sustainable design features include ample daylighting on-site water retention, low-emitting materials to improve indoor air quality, energy recovery in the mechanical systems, panel-level monitoring of power consumption, and a high-albedo (i.e., highly reflective) roof to reduce heat gain in the warmer months.
The project is “a very tight, very simple building, that we thought was carefully drawn and composed to make a simple statement, but serve a very real need,” the jury said that “this is a facility that universities around the world would love to have.”
