Capital One Financial Corporation Headquarters
Capital One Financial Corporation consolidated its Northern Virginia operations onto a new corporate headquarters campus of approximately 1.1 million square feet. Integral Group was commissioned to assist Capital One in selecting an appropriate site and subsequent architectural and MEP engineering design services for the headquarters building.
The occupancy of the campus was phased over five years, with the first phase consisting of 500,000 ft². The initial phase of this project was fast-track with occupancy by the third quarter of 2001. A chilled water central plant in the basement and roof-mounted cooling towers serve chilled water air handling units on each floor, supplying overhead VAV systems on floors 1 & 2 and underfloor air systems on floors 3 – 14. Hot water heat is provided to cover air and air handling units for floors 1 and 2. Floors 3 -14 are supplied with electric heat at the perimeter terminal units.
The electrical service consists of two 4,000 amp switchboards. An 800 KW diesel generator serves life safety loads. A 1,750 KW generator and 750 KVA UPS provide power to critical loads, including the data center, data closets, the executive floor, and critical HVAC systems. Indirect fixtures provide lighting in typical office areas with a networked lighting control system allowing individual user control of lighting levels.
KEY FEATURES• Underfloor Air Distribution (UFAD)
• Minimal Ductwork
• Underfloor Supply Plenum
• Direct Supply into Occupied Zone
• Stratification & Return Through Ceiling Plenum
• Individual Occupant Adjustment of Flow Rate
A state-of-the-art Building Automation Control System (BAS) into the design for the facility. The system included full DDC capability for all MEP systems to the interface, including the building’s lighting control, a web browser, power monitoring software, and alarm notification. Special areas within the new building include a boardroom, executive office suite, cafeteria, fitness facility, conference center, and data center.
