Thompson Rivers University | Library and House of Learning

As part of Thompson Rivers University (TRU)’s campus plan, a 33,000 ft² library commons area and 6,400 ft² mixed-use learning space were designed to support the educational experience for students and faculty. The House of Learning incorporates design elements inspired by First Nations culture and includes study and learning spaces, a tiered lecture theater, and space for Aboriginal programs and services. The project is LEED Gold certified and contains highly sustainable design elements with flexibility for future needs.

Integral Group was retained to provide mechanical, electrical, energy modeling, and LEED consulting services for the TRU Library and House of Learning. The team designed the features to meet LEED Gold standards while keeping them flexible to allow for a diverse range of usages. The House of Learning accommodates functions from formal lectures to First Nations ceremonial gatherings; thus, elements such as lighting had to be multifunctional.

Recycled pine beetle wood was used to construct the House of Learning. It also features a central sky-lit atrium and a four-story bio-filter Living Wall, which regulates the building’s temperature and creates optimal air quality.
